Sensitive response to the dynamic quality of the existing landscape was the motivation and inspiration for this project as we sought to minimize impact to the existing ecology. This determined the footprint of the building as we sought to preserve several of the largest trees on the site and to disrupt the forest vegetation and its inhabitants as little as possible. The building itself was thought of as a large protected platform that offers shelter while connecting inhabitants to the larger rhythms and cycles of the natural surroundings. Thus, the main living areas are exposed to the forest as well as larger views of the sound, Hope Island, Whidbey Island and the Olympic Mountains beyond. Private sleeping spaces on the upper floor, by contrast, are insular and protected tucked beneath the over-scale roof. The structural system was an investigation develop a new system that reduces material consumption, reduces ground disturbance and  further our studies of lightness and stability in architecture.

In this existing 800 square foot condominium unit efficient use of space was critical within the compact footprint. The space was stripped to its raw shell exposing a cast in place structural concrete frame. The rawness of the space was appealing to our client. This character contrasting with a highly refined piece of cabinetry became the focal point. This laquered Japanese 'tansu chest' was strategically placed within the space to form separation between rooms while enclosing key functions such as cooking, dining, bathing, laundry, storage and working leaving the remaining space uncluttered and flexible. adaptable and changing according to need, the space continually transforms folding and unfolding, opening and closing parts to allow the space to adapt to different functions and activities throughout the day.

sunshine ribbon

This house revolves around a ribbon of light connecting all rooms of the house in an open volume that unifies family activities on all levels. It surrounds daily rituals with the changing qualities of light throughout the day. This new residence was built upon the foundations of the former house with levels opening to two levels, front and back on the sloping site.

This remodel and rooftop addition in a turn of the century condominium began with an attic interstitial space that separated the unit from the attic. It became a grade school grammar game of prepositions: how to inhabit the attic above, upon, between, beneath, inside, and through the attic interstitial space.
The project incorporated a rooftop terrace, a library loft, a shower skylight, vaulted living room---each dynamically interacting with the existing spaces to create a new spatially dynamic play of volumes. In addition, the design is a study of how old and new overlap and contrast to create a new style of Georgian contemporary.

This remodel/addition captures the beatuiful views from the second floor of an existing second story of the house. All the living spaces were placed on the upper floor inverting traditional spatial ordering. The spaces capture lake and city views in the near view as well as the mountain ranges beyond. The arrangement allowed empty nesters to create a mother-in-law apartment on the lower floor.

Working with landscape extraordinaire, Kevin Long at Urban Wilds, this project focused on exterior elements to compliment the existing house and integrate with the landscape design. Our work included design of retaining wall, fence and rebuilding of deck and stair.

kohala residence

Designed for the south slope of the Kohala Mountain Range on the Big Island of Hawaii.  This project takes advantage of the fabulous views from 3,000 ft looking down the kohala coast as well as creating a sheltered courtyard from the strong tradewinds.

greenlake residence

The owners of this lot near Greenlake wanted a very traditional house that fit seamlessly into the character of traditional houses in the area. Although the desired square footage was significantly larger than typical bungalos, we worked hard to keep the house to an appropriate scale by creating a full basement and garage by continuing the character of existing on-street garages typical throughout the neighborhood.
